Most board decks report a single pipeline health number: coverage ratio, a multiple of quota. It is easy to compute, easy to feel good about, and close to meaningless on its own.
Coverage answers "how much pipeline do we have." It does not answer "how much of it will actually convert" - the question that determines whether the quarter lands on plan. Conflating them is how a 4x-covered pipeline still misses by 30 percent, at a cost that can run $260,000 per quarter in misclassified value for a 50-rep team.
The five metrics that actually de-risk a forecast
- Stagnation rate. Open pipeline past its stage-specific age threshold without a milestone change. The single best leading indicator of forecast risk.
- Data completeness on core fields. Stage, Amount, Close Date, Next Step, on deals inside the current forecast window.
- Stage-to-activity correlation. Whether the claimed stage is supported by logged activity, not just picklist selection.
- Rep-level variance. How consistently different reps apply the same stage and forecast-category definitions.
- Historical accuracy by category. How often "Commit" or "Best Case" deals actually closed that quarter, tracked over time.
A pipeline that's 4x covered by ratio alone, with none of these five tracked, carries real forecast-miss risk. The same 4x coverage, with all five tracked, is a defensible number a CRO can actually stand behind in a board meeting.
Turning metrics into a board-ready narrative
A CRO who presents these five metrics alongside coverage ratio changes the board conversation. Instead of "trust me, the pipeline is healthy," it becomes "here is the evidence, and here is exactly where residual risk sits."
That shift matters the first time a forecast miss happens under scrutiny. It is the difference between an explainable variance and a credibility problem - and an unexplained variance, one nobody can trace back to a specific cause, tends to cost a 50-rep team another $110,000 per quarter in decisions made off an unreliable number.
Most of these metrics do not require a new data warehouse. They require running the calculation consistently against live Salesforce data, on a recurring basis.
Qelvx's diagnostic calculates all five directly from your org in about 90 seconds, with no procurement cycle - the scan runs on serverless, in-memory infrastructure, which is why initiating it costs nothing. The board-ready, ranked export is the paid deliverable once the risk picture needs to leave your own screen.
